Purpose of Test
This test measures the amount of water, enzyme, and any extractable organic-soluble components of the following materials used during textile processing:
- Fibers
- Yarns
- Fabrics containing cellulose fibers and cellulose blends
- Other types of fiber
Terminology Defined
Extractable Content – Chemical contents that can be extracted from the textile fabric.
Amylase Solution – Enzymes used for hydrolyzing scratch molecules into polymers.
Hexane Solvent – A solvent that is commonly used to degrease and clean textile fabrics.
Test Method
Materials Used for Test
- Test specimen
- Water
- Amylase Solution
- Hexane Solvent

Testing Procedure
Water and soluble enzymes are extracted from a test specimen by treatments in:
- Hot water
- Amylase solution
These enzymes include oils, fats, and waxes that are removed with hexane solvent.
Test Procedure (Summary)
Part 1: Exposure of test specimen to hot water, then amylase solution: The test specimen is exposed to a specified amount of boiling water. The saturated test specimen will also be exposed to amylase solution.
Part 2: Extraction of soluble enzymes: The oils, fats, and waxes are extracted with hexane solvent.
